A Burning Denial

oscar wilde quote 2

Is there a denial in your life that you regret? Not buying the car. Not going on that secret rendezvous. Not taking that last drag of a cigarette before you quit. That thing that you have to say no to- but you just want to whisper yes, yes, yes.

Sometimes the things we deny ourselves tells us a lot about ourselves. So tell us, what have you said no to, but you wish you could say yes?

As I was searching for a song for the prompt, I ran across this video. Their relationship was so volatile. They wanted it, but couldn’t have it. Also, my nerd may be showing a little bit.

Please link your entry here, either with a pingback or in the comments. You’ve got until Friday at midnight EST to link up. We will then take all the links and ask the community to vote on their favorite on Saturday.

  1. […] I’ve got one for you over at The Reverie. It’s interesting what someone else’s thought process can lead you to. Write up something and by all means link it up over there. I was going to reblog the post, but for some reason, I can’t do that to this blog. Oh well, this link will do nicely, won’t it? […]

    Left on the Table

I had a choice to make
Play it safe or run wild
    Slide back to stability
    Or keep curled up
    With my destiny’s child

    Why a whirlwind weekend
    Became a frenzied fever
    Careening out of control
    A burning, churning potion
Of flesh and food; oil and water
    Sand, salt, sea and sweat
Twixt my lips and skin of the one
Young enough to be my daughter
On her every need I doted
    Took no time for regrets
Yet soon the cards were on the table
    The choice quite clear
Stay trigger happy, all locked and loaded
Ready to pack up and run away
Or slither back to home and hearth
While my heart wished to stay

The night I left our room
    I became a hollow shell
    Bang me, clang me
    No chimes like a bell
Empty as the void of space
    Emotions had been spent
Dry as the desert; tears long since shed
    A walking split open cask
    Unable to hold the truth
    Giving meaning anew to life
    Was an arduous task
    Slowly scar tissue built
    Mounding over the wounds
    Clouding recollections of her face
Yet unable to let loose the guilt
Though I tried it is true
    Could not remove the trace
    Of faded, mingled memories
    Roiled into their strange brew
The stain of my deed that day
    Is tattooed upon my soul
    Once a righteous place
Since twisted into a fetid hole
    Tainted and corrupted by denial
    Left without a saving grace
Filled with bitter phlegm and bile

When torn awake from my sleep
    By the same recurring dream
I will stand by the window staring
Off into darkness shadows so deep
As my hands tear at one other flailing
Failing to eradicate the final trace
Left by her last few breaths
    In our ending embrace
